M&M #010: Eggs in Baskets & Keeping Calm
Listen to the audio version
🐣 Marketing ➔ Eggs in Baskets
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Sage advice.
☝️But… It goes deeper than that.
As an up-and-coming success in the making (I’m talking bout you, champ 😉) this concept couldn’t apply more perfectly.
🐣 The life/career balance
🐣 The prioritization of projects and tasks
🐣 The effort of delegation vs doing it yourself
🐣 The way you budget and invest your capital
And of course… where you place your marketing efforts can be included in this list too.
For instance, this happened to me last week…
If you search me on Instgram or Facebook right now,
I’m gone. Erased. Totally invisible.
Why? Great question. Apparently Facebook’s (well technically Meta's) security team thinks I’m not who I say I am and has decided to fully disable my account and not providing me with a way to remedy it.
As a regular user since like 2006 I’m gutted by this for so many reasons.
Whether it be pictures I can not recover, connections to old friends that I never get to see, managing pages and ads accounts for clients, or using IG/FB as platforms to grow my reach…
It’s all gone - poof.
Honestly, I’m disgusted in the company.
I’m disappointed by the lack of support.
And I feel defeated by one of the largest connection hubs of the world (their ecosystem provides huge opportunity for marketers like me).
Point is…
🐣 Don’t put all your eggs in one basket - especially if you have no control over that basket.
Fortunately, I have this newsletter, LinkedIn, a YouTube channel, and a podcast as some outlets for content and channels for connection.
I know I’m venting, but there is a lesson here.
A big one that applies to most areas in life.
😌 Mindset ➔ Keep Calm
Has anyone ever told you to calm down?
They might be on to something actually.
Here’s why keeping your cool actually makes you better…
Fun Fact: You are 30% smarter in a positive frame of mind 🤓
Life is stressful. We all deal with stress on a daily basis.
But did you know there are actually two different types of stress?
😥 Distress
😌 Eustress
Distress is the type of stress that has a negative connotation like when going through an ugly breakup. Whereas eustress is the type that leaves you feeling motivated, energized, and overall better - like after a good workout.
Google defines eustress as a moderate or normal psychological stress interpreted as being beneficial for the experiencer.
But here’s the key…
🔑 Eustress is not defined by what the actual stressor is itself, but rather how one perceives it to be.
Whether it be your tired crying baby or an overly-needy client, it’s not about the circumstance… It’s how you choose to look at it.
Some things are just outright bad no matter how you slice it.
But many stresses aren’t straight up ‘bad’... They’re formative.
Action Item:
Are you stressing due to a negative threat or a positive challenge?
Make a list of all the things that are contributing to your stress. Then make a line down the middle of the page and categorize them by whether the stressor is a negative or positive one. Ask yourself, “When I get to the other side of this thing and this particular stressor is gone… Will I ultimately be a better version of myself because of it?” Cause if so…
Calm down. It’s all good baby.
Until next time ✌️
